Carl Jung

The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung founded analytic psychology at the turn of the last century. This discipline emphasizes the value of one’s creative forces and one’s development toward wholeness.

In his effort to understand and engage the whole person, Jung viewed his analytical psychology as a therapy which releases creativity and promotes individual psychological development. Thus, far from being just another theory, Jungian psychology embraces the universe in all its manifestations: art, history, myth, philosophy, and spirituality are all essential components of Jung’s worldview.

Carl jung carefully recorded his dreams, fantasies, and visions. He found that his experiences tended to form themselves into persons, beginning with a wise old man and his companion, a little girl. The wise old man evolved, over a number of dreams, into a sort of spiritual guru. The little girl became "anima," the feminine soul, who served as his main medium of communication with the deeper aspects of his unconscious.A leathery brown dwarf would show up guarding the entrance to the unconscious. He was "the shadow," a primitive companion for Jung's ego.

Allowing waking consciousness to furnish our only psychological point of view holds our educational efforts to a fixed way of seeing, of feeling, of knowing and of understanding in such a way that it unexpectedly restricts the very innovation, imagination and creativity that we wish to cultivate...

The Role of Play in Adulthood

Imagination is an important part of mental health self expression and creativity according to the encyclopedia of adulthood as we go into adulthood we encounter obstacles to the development of creativity and self expressiveness are encountered. Play is a necessary relief from the seriousness of life.

Our Vision... a taste of our design..

When the user initially enters the world of REplay Forest they will encounter a projection of a dead forest on the screen.

They will then meet Faylinn an old and wise Guru/inventor that will guide them on how to interact with the forest to bring it back to life.

These are some early mock ups of how the rePLAY forest may look when entering it.

More to come,

So what's the story?

A brief explanation of our narrative...

REplay Forest is guarded by Shadow, a dark elusive creature that keeps the forest in darkness and wilderness, Shadow is a metaphor for the adult users repressed weaknesses, fears and insecurities.

Anima is an adult, who has stumbled into this forest of darkness and is expected to ignite the forest and bring it to life, as Anima enters the forest she realises she has forgotten how to use her imagination, she envisages how this world may look so she can bring it back to life. Anima encounters objects in the forest that may help her on her journey, yet she needs help to strengthen her imagination and therefore strengthen creativity.

Outside the forest Anima encounters a wise old guru named Faylinn. He is there to guide Anima and show her how to play and delve into the world of REplay Forest, using the tools at her disposal.

Delve into rePLAYforest...

We are making a creative space for adults that uses visuals and audio to express the vibrancy of imagination through curiosity and play, rePLAY is set in a fantasy forest that feeds on adults creativity, exploration and imagination.

Explore the tangible interactions in the world of rePLAY and bring the dead forest, onscreen, to life, through your imagination and interaction.

The more you play with rePLAY forest the more life it breeds into the dead forest. The forest needs your attentention and imagination to grow and prosper.

rePLAYforest is a project we are wroking on as part of our BA Communications and Creative Multimedia in DKIT.

Stay tuned for more updates,

Abstract Inspiration

Links to existing projects that came up during Interactions class today:
Go look at the animation on the HYPE framework and then come back to me. Click here.

There are no images used in the animation, it is entirely a coded graphic. You will notice if you refresh the page that it starts as a blank canvas every time. That is pretty cool. This shows that programming for multimedia can be as creative and expressive as any other design medium; for example graphic design.

Just the other day I was looking at the screensaver on my iMac ...and with rePLAY in mind... I was thinking how onscreen movement through colour and light could represent physical activity between a user and our onscreen elements.

Some short clips of the screensaver

1) Slow, defined shapes. Movement becoming more regular.
possibly user has just started to play

2) colour explosion
user really getting into our interactions

3) movement reverts to slower, formed shapes
maybe user has stopped playing

Audio added to this mix could explode the design into a whole other dimension.

rePlay started out on an abstract path, however, it has grown into more defined shapes and objects as we cement our idea, skills and resources.

Getting Started

Our group formed today in Project Planning & Management class.  Check out the About tab to meet the members.  Read on for a summary of our first meeting.

From the offset our individual vision for this project seem to line up quite well.  Things we agree on... adult target audience, loose narrative from the users point of view i.e. no particular sequence of events.  Mostly, we do not want a narrative based on game levels, or a project aimed at children.

Questions we asked ourselves today:

How will the user enter the space?
How will the user interact with the project?
What will the space look like?
Is the experience audio or visual?
What is the theme?

Siobhán envisioned a panoramic, all encompassing user experience, while Alannagh described an immersive experience.  We all agree our project will be highly physically interactive.

We talked quite a bit about the look and feel. We have more or less decided on a 'forest' environment.  Although it is worth mentioning that any theme would work with this project.  If rePLAY were set in a derelict urban area or a room in a house it would be just as effective.  Similarly it could be a smaller environment like a merry-go. Any place that can go from dead to alive, or motionless to chaotic has the potential of being brought to life through imagination and play.
